Putting It Together

w/ Kit Goldstein Grant

Did you ever wonder how a musical is put together? Come learn the lingo and explore some of the conventions of writing for musical theater. We'll look at some of the ways in which musical structure differs from straight plays, and learn the basics of writing songs for musical theater!

character, libretto basics, song types & placement, getting into more lyric nitty gritty plus much more!

Kit Goldstein Grant is a prize-winning New York City-based composer, lyricist and librettist. She is currently developing a new podcast musical, MICRO-FACE, for NPR podcast PLANET MONEY. Her musicals have been seen in South Africa (THE NOSE, Artscape Theatre Centre; The Drama Factory; National Arts Festival) and in New York at Theatre Row (THE GIANT HOAX, Indieworks Theatre Co.), the Master Theater (THE NOSE, dir. Michael Chase Gosselin), the Midtown International Theater Festival (THE NOSE, nominee Best Musical), the Strawberry One-Act Festival (THE COMMUTERS, Indieworks Theatre Co., voted Audience Favorite), The Players Theatre (WHERE ANGELS FEAR TO TREAD, Moxie Arts), and Theatre for the New City (THE WRONG BOX). Five of her musicals for young audiences have toured schools with the Schenectady Theatre for Children, including IT’S RAINING TAMALES!, which is published by YouthPLAYS. Kit has studied at Juilliard and the Tony-Award winning BMI Musical Theatre Writing Workshop, and holds a M.M. in Composition from Brooklyn College. www.kitgoldstein.com
