Beyond the Binary in Casting and Writing

Moderated by: Mickey Johnson

Talking Points

  •  So when I say transgender tell me what your understanding of that is.

  • What about when I say non-binary? Where do you typically encounter these words/ definitions?

  • When I say trans characters who comes to mind? Are these realistic representations?

  • What are some of the casting/writing stereotypes for trans/non-binary characters? Which of these should be outlawed?

  • How do we stay away from these stereotypes?

  • What are the warning signs in a character breakdown that would let you know this character is a stereotype?

  • What realistic challenges do you believe trans/non-binary actors face each day that diminish their power in an audition room, rehearsal, performance, survival jobs? What tools can we use to combat this?

  • What are examples of trans/non-binary characters that resonate with you? What about the role makes them stand out as fully developed?

  • What are examples of trans/non-binary characters that do not resonate with you? What are the reasons why these characters fell flat?

  • What trans characters do you wish were more represented?

  • How do you write a character who’s experience is so outside of your own?

  •  What helps you understand the needs/desires of your characters? What would help translate that to a trans/non-binary character?

  • What are some things we can do every day to build up our understanding trans/non-binary folks. Where do we start as playwrights, directors, and actors to exemplify allyship?

This is our chance to talk with each other about topics that we as artists, creatives and humans need to have. The key is we talk to and with each other. There is no panel or special guest that is smarter on a topic. We are the collective smarter panel.
